A practical decision guide

Agents, Skills, plugins and MCP: where should a business start?

Describe the work you need completed before choosing the technology. Organizing inquiries, answering from approved documents and writing back to systems may need different combinations.

These terms describe different layers of capability and can be combined. Start with a verifiable task and its permissions, then test the proposed approach with your actual tools and materials.

Understand which layer each capability addresses

Here, a Skill means reusable task instructions or a process, and a plugin means an extension to a host application. Products use these terms differently; names alone do not establish file compatibility or execution support.

Typical uses and prerequisites
CapabilityWhat it helps withWhat to verify first
AgentInterpret a request, choose steps and use permitted tools within a bounded task.Model capability, tool scope, stopping rules and human approval.
SkillReuse task instructions, handling rules or an operating process.Host support, source quality and the tools needed to execute it.
PluginAdd an interface or function inside an existing application.Host version, installation rights, extension APIs and maintenance.
MCPExpose tools, resources or prompts to compatible clients through a shared protocol.Client/server compatibility, authentication, network access and underlying system permissions.
WorkflowOrganize triggers, decisions, approval and write-back steps.Inputs, outputs, failure branches, retries, deduplication and observable results.

Work backward from one business action

  • For a repeatable writing or organizing method, start with reusable instructions and approved materials. Whether a Skill fits depends on your host application.
  • For a function inside existing software, first check its built-in configuration and whether a plugin is needed.
  • For connections between systems, confirm real APIs, access rights and authentication before choosing MCP or another integration method.
  • For a process with multiple steps and approvals, map the workflow first. Add a model or agent where interpretation or selection is actually needed.

Illustration: organize an inquiry and draft a reply

This is a process illustration, not a customer delivery or performance result.

Read authorized inquiry materials → organize agreed fields → draft from approved product information → have a business owner approve price, lead time and external sending → record the result.

Handling rules can become reusable instructions, while a workflow handles approval. MCP is a possible connection method if both sides support it. Producing a draft does not establish permission to send it or update a system.

Verify four things with actual project conditions

  • Materials: check sources, versions, missing information and conflicts; use authorized real or anonymized test samples.
  • Access: define what may be read or written and who approves it. An API still requires eligibility, field access and limit checks.
  • Results: identify the recipient and how to review field accuracy, human edits and failure handling.
  • Maintenance: agree who updates materials, detects exceptions and revokes access, and how third-party costs are handled.

Start the discussion with a one-page workflow brief

Describe the process, trigger, inputs, outputs, approvals and exclusions. Tools and models can be selected after assessment; price, timing, deployment and maintenance depend on the actual scope.
